The CDI Clinical Documentation Improvement Nurse will provide a key role in facilitating long-term success of the clinical documentation improvement and integrity program by providing day-to-day intense oversight of the CDI program.  Reporting to the Director of Case Management, the Clinical Documentation Specialist CDS Registered Nurse RN will facilitate clinical documentation improvement through extensive daily interaction with physicians, caregivers, case management and coding staff to achieve timely, accurate, and complete documentation.

The Clinical Documentation Improvement CDI Nurse will also provide on-going physician/provider education and consultation to improve the accuracy, completeness, specificity and compliance of the in-patient acute care Medical Record.  The Clinical Documentation Specialist CDS Nurse will educate physicians/providers, RNs and other healthcare disciplines in understanding the importance of accurate documentation that reflects EMC’s patient population as it is related to severity of illness and risk of mortality.

The goal of the Clinical Documentation Improvement program is to ensure that physician and allied health documentation accurately represents the condition and co-morbidities for patients of the hospital.  The Clinical Documentation Specialist CDS Nurse will work in collaboration with the medical center’s team of clinicians, coding professionals, physicians, physician's assistants' and certified registered nurse practitioners to ensure accurate and timely clinical documentation in the medical record that supports the coding process in attaining appropriate DRGs based on sound clinical entries in the medical record.  

The Clinical Documentation Improvement CDI Nurse will support ongoing communication and education on documentation opportunities, coding and reimbursement issues, as well as performance improvement methodologies to physicians and entire hospital staff.  The Clinical Documentation Improvement CDI RN will function as the Steering Committee administrator and participate in CDI Task Force meetings to provide all around oversight of the CDI program.

The ideal candidate for Clinical Documentation Specialist CDS Nurse should have BSN degree with minimum of 3 years experience in an acute care, hospital or similar setting and minimum of 3-years experience in CDI Programs with knowledge of Medicare Part A and Part B. The CDI Nurse should be CCDS/CDIP and ICD-10 trained and have 2-3 years extensive knowledge of regulatory environment and understand CDMP® documentation strategies.  Health Information Management program required with BS in relevant Healthcare field preferred
