Position description
The Department of Pediatrics () and the Sun Lab researching Genetic
Mechanisms of Lung Function and Disease at the University of
California, San Diego are committed to academic excellence and
diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body are seeking a
Project Scientist.
The Project Scientist will be expected to conduct research, as well
as work on existing and new research programs in the group. In
addition, the Project Scientist will work with external groups and
coordinate joint research efforts associated with
multi-institutional grants awarded to the Sun Lab. The Project
Scientist will use mouse genetics to model lung disease and
infectious viral agents in mice, including influenza and
SARS-CoV-2.
In addition to research, the position requires publication of
research results, presentation at conferences, participation in
group meetings, supervision of technicians and undergraduates,
mentoring and teaching graduate students and postdocs, grant
writing, and submission of research reports to sponsors.
Appointment will be at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Project
Scientist level based on background and experience.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Candidates must have a PhD in genetics, respiratory biology, or a
related field. Candidates must have evidence of publications in
leading science journals.
Preferred qualifications
Candidates with at least 15 years of research experience after
graduate training are preferred.
Candidates with experience with murine models of infection and
experience in handling biosafety level 2 (BSL2) and BSL3 agents are
preferred. Candidates with a demonstrated ability to obtain funding
(including fellowships, travel awards, and funding proposals) are
also preferred.
